the novel is about repression. jekyll is a deeply repressed man who wishes to be respected but habours sinister desires transformation into hyde is a wonderful disguise.
the narritave can also be viewed as an allegory for addiction. seen through jekylls addiction to the potion to transform into hyde.towards the end of the novedl jekyll cannot wean himself off the drug or the obession to transform to fullfill his desires.
the last sectionof the play can be viewed as a horrific description of the nightmare of addition, wishing to hide away from everyone and violent mood swings.
