Climate

Cards (14)

  • Hot climates
  • Equatorial Climate.
    • Location : On the equator (west Africa edges).
    • temperature - hot all year round (average temp : 27 degrees )
    • precipitation - twice the amount of rainfall Ireland gets
  • Temperate climates - warm … : Mediterranean (Italy)
  • Cool Temperate Oceanic
    • Location 40-60 north or south equator- found in northwest Europe and North west coast of USA.
    • Summer:Mild, average 6-14 degrees.
    • Winter plenty precipitation, frost can occur (temps can reach 0 degrees).
    • precipitaion - rain,snow,sleet hail : 800 -2000mm per year
  • Cold climates tundra - top Boreal - bottom
  • Tundra -
Location : North pole - extreme northern parts of Canada and Russia.
    Temp : Summer : 4 degrees/winter -35 degrees.
precipitaion : Approx 250mm per year
  • Factors that influence climate : Distance from the sea
    • The North Atlantic Current influences Ireland’s climate because it flows through Ireland.(its a warm current that flow from mexico
    • Ireland is surrounded by the sea.
    • The closer you are to the sea in summer the cooler it is because water heats up slowly.
    • In the winter water heats up faster than the summer.
    • Areas near the coast in summer aren’t as hot as areas that are not near the coast.
  • 2. Factors that influence climate - Latitude
    • Latitude is the distance from the equator
    • the sun shines directly on the equator (0 degrees).
    • The closer you are to the equator the hotter your climate will be.
  • 3.
    • Altitude means the height above sea level.
    • The higher a place is the colder the climate will be. Temp decreases by 1 degrees every 150 m climbed - lapse rate.
  • aspect influences the climate.
    • Aspect is the direction in which a slope is facing. South facing slopes in the northern hemisphere receive more sunlight as they are positioned in the Sun‘s path. North facing slopes are not orientated in the suns path so they received less sunlight. Slopes facing the sea would also experience high levels of precipitation
    • The wind that blows most regularly over an area is called the prevailing wind or prevailing air mass. Winds are named after the direction from which they blow.
    • South-westerly winds: Ireland's prevailing wind blows from across the Atlantic Ocean. Heated in winter by the NAC(North Atlantic Currnet, these winds bring temperate conditions with cool summers and mild winters. They also bring rain because they absorb water while travelling over the ocean before reaching Ireland.
  • Area of high pressure - south pole
  • It’s adapted to the equatorial climate because the leaves are often dark to protect them from intense sunshine and they have pointed tips call drip tips which allow rainwater to drain off easily.
  • Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and release oxygen (O2). This can benefit the environment and help slow down climate change.
Less extreme weather events would occur ; forest fires.Money won’t have to be spent on reconstructing structures.
