Cards (6)

  • “Stars hide your fire let not light see your black and deep desires”
Guilt, ambition, good vs evil- Macbeth is aware what he has to do is evil to become king. First signs of a man that knows right to wrong and his moral compass will affect him later. Committing regicide is biggest serious sin so he asks the whole universe to keep what he is doing hidden. Understand how ambitious M is
  • "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" - witches

Opposites "fair" and " foul" it is a paradox and two contradictory terms. Sets the witches up to be people that cannot be trusted. They may say one thing but acc mean another. Appearence vs reality, supernatural. Macbeth seeks advice from them and their trickery and decepetion is a vital role in the story as he puts his faith in supernatural.
  • "So foul and fair a day, I have never seen" Macbeth

Aligns his views with supernatural and puts him on a level playing field with the wicked witches. A paradox as it doesn't make sense. Makes us consider that he is evil. Elizabethan audience instantly distrusts him as he is deceptive.
  • "Your face my thane, is a book where men may read strange matters" - LM tellling M how his face gives away thoughts

Metaphor- M paranoia is already very visible and LM wants him to be more deceptive. LM takes the lead and is the driving force for the secracy and scheming of evil plans. Goes against gender roles as they were subservient. Seen negative by audience, her deception shows her being akin to supernatural
  • "look like the innocent flower be the serpent under it" LM

Telling M needs to appear kind whilst plotting regicide. Flower is symbol of innocence contrasts to deception of snake. Garden of eden biblical reference a snake luring M into temptation by LM. Instruct M to be evil and LM is really good of decieving of ppl but secretly being quite venomous. M needs to be a predator
  • "Theres daggers in mens smile" Donalbain talking to malcom

Highlighting how they shouldn't trust anyone as they both flee the country in caution. Iconography of daggers being weapons used to deal damage. Smiles are endearing and a sign of happiness so the juxtaposition between the two. Metaphor suggest appearance vs reality of thing.Dramatic irony as audience knows of M and links to daggers. In Elizabethan time important to act honourably, so to see M and LM act so deceptive it aligns them to evil and the people the audience rooted against.
