    Whether its a supernatural apparition or a conjuration from his own mind. Macbeth needs this. The hallucinatory representation of Macbeth’s obsessive ambition reveals his disturbing psychological reality at this point of the play.
  • " The raven himself is hoarse" - LM after receiving letter about propheies

    "Raven" bad omen, symbolic of ill deeds to come to Duncan. "Hoarse" rough and harsh. The raven couldv'e been the messenger but LM already describing him as that shows her ill intent and foreshadows the bad things to come for Duncan. Committing regicide will be a difficult task but she already sees him as dead. Raven connotes to death.
  • "out damned spot out I say" LM 

    Through LM guilt and madness, Shakespeare presents the tragic consequences of misplaced ambitions. Sleep cts as a symbol of innocence and her sleepwalking is a result of her guilt. Further exemplified with the blood on her hands. She is unable to cleanse herself of the deed of committing regicide. Earlier she said " a little water clears us of the deed"
  • " Macbeth does murder sleep " 

    Macbeths immediate guilt following the murder of Duncan. evoke a small amount of empathy from audience, but act of regicide was unforgivable during jacobean society. His guilt was unusual within antagonists of the time and would've sparked interest from audience. "sleep" symbolises innocence with Macbeths lack of sleep emphasising his culpability.
  • " All the perfumes of arabia will not sweeten this hand"

    Guilt and remorse. Nothing can remove this metaphorical stain. Shows the psychological effects of their actions have affected her. Perfumes are typically associated with pleasant smells, this represents a facade or a cover up to the reality of the situation . Arabia on the other hand is knows as a place with exotic and mysterious qualities, symbolises how their actins have taken them to a dark and unfarmiliar place
  • "Will all great Neptunes oceans wash this blood clean from my hand?"

    Neptune was a Roman God of water and seas, illustrating a large amount of power from external forces and a lack of personal power. There is a repeated motif of "hands" throughout the play which symbolises a lack of control, this can also be seen when LM cannot wash the blood off her hands. Noun "blood" symbolises danger and Macbeths malevolence in the play, this can be linked to the beginning of the play where LM states " a little water clears us of this deed." The phrase.
  • "Never shake thy gory locks at me!" Macbeth talking to banquos ghost 

    Exclamation demonstrates the fact that macbeth believes that by intimidation he can control not only people, but spirits. However, the ghost does not respond to this demand, which shows that even those in power cannot control the supernatural. This was perhaps a message to the nobles of king james' court.
  • "Here lay Duncan his silver skin laced with golden blood"

    M is grieving loss of Duncan even after killing him. "Silver" link to jewellery and "laced" connotations to artistry and something decorative. "Golden "expensive, valuable and crowns that kings wear. Figurative image from metaphor, Duncan is great value to M, but exaggerating it. M wants to appear like a loyal servant to king, but possibility he genuinely feels this way ad he wasnt certain on killing Duncan.
  • " O, full of scorpions is my mind"

    "Full" no room for anything else but his guilt and paranoia. "Scorpions"venomous and known to cause long lasting pain and suffering. Figurative represents negative thoughts and the anguish macbeth feels. The sting and poison are inside Macbeth's head and it feels painful, and if it isn't a headache it could be presumed to be supernatural. Hyperbolic language to represent his guilt and paranoia and that he feels genuinely hurt. Scorpions exotic wild creatures and S uses it as scorpions were known to have a deadly sting.
