    1. Between 1945-1961 3.5 million East Germans left for West Germany via the open border in Berlin

    4. On the 13th August 1961 there was a tank standoff between the US and the USSR at Checkpoint Charlie
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis
    1. A U2 spy plane spots missiles sites being prepared on Cuba on 14th October 1962
    2. The US launches a blockade of Cuba, but calls it a quarantine
    3. There is a 13 day standoff where nuclear war looks likely
    4. A deal is done: no Soviet missiles on Cuba and no US missiles on Turkey (the Turkey part is secret)
