Strategies to manage the TRF

Cards (4)

  • Amazon Regional Protected Areas - Since 1988 the Brazilian government has established many conservation areas. ARPA now cover an area 20 times the size of the Belgium. 44% of Brazilian Amazon consists of National Parks and wildlife refuges where farming is banned.
  • Parcia Project - Rondonia, western Amazon - a sustainable forestry scheme where they plan to plant 20 million fast growing hardwood seedlings on 4000 small holdings, to mature over the next 25 years. Financial assistance is given to smallholders to prepare land, plant and maintain. Tree nurseries provide seedlings. These trees sequester carbon, reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. reestablish the water and carbon cycles, reduce runoff and restore nutrients to the soil. The surui - Indigenous people in Rondonia - planting seedlings grown in a local tree nursery.
  • REDD - UN Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation scheme - in 2009 the Surui were given carbon credits to protect their areas of rainforest. In 2012 the cosmetics TNC Natura purchased credits from them worth 120 000 tonnes. This creates a financial value for the carbon stored in the rainforest. However, many feel the scheme will lead to land grabbing and corruption.
  • Improved Agricultural Techniques - Diversification to find new ways to manage the soil - rotational cropping, combing livestock and crops, adding natural fertilisers (manure) to the soil - to increase productivity and therefore decrease deforestation.
