God gives us our soul and it is the spiritual, non-physical aspect of a person which connects us to God and goes to the after-life after death
Have a fallen nature
Adam and Eve disobeyed God when they ate from the Tree of Knowledge and they became aware of right and wrong but their relationship was broken.
Given free will
Adam and Eve were forbidden from eating from the Tree of knowledge. This shows they have free will in making their decision. Humans are responsible for their actions.
Trinity
The idea is that there are 'three persons' all of which are God. However, the trinity is not 3 people joined together to make one God
God the Father
he sustains and rules over everything, the one that judges humans, he cares for humans like a father and created the world and everything in it, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, omniscient.
God the son
Born of the Virgin Mary and performed miracles. He was crucified and resurrected and is seen as the savior of the world (Messiah). Came to the earth in the form of Jesus and is God incarnate ( God in human form). Jesus eas both fully human whilst on earth and also fully God at all times.
God the holy spirit
Part of God that works in the world. It is a helper and guides humans and is the invisiblepower of God as it is the unseen power of God at work in the world
Incarnation
'made in the flesh' so refers to God being both divine (godly) and human. Jesus is divine as he was conceived through the holy spirit ( virgin birth), he also performed miracles, healed the sick and was raised from the dead. Jesus is seen as human because he was born to a human mother, had a human body, had human feelings and showed emotion.
Messiah
' the anointed one'. the Messiah was predicted to come to the world as the leader of the Jewish people who would combine the roles of a political leader and a religious leader. Jesus never claimed to be the Messiah but it was predicted that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David (Jesus was), he was to be born in Bethlehem ( Jesus was), he was to be born of a virgin (Jesus was), he would be killed for the sins of humans (Jesus was)
Saviour
Jesus is believed to ' save people from their sins'. The name Jesus in Hebrew means ' thelordsaves'. God planned to send Jesus to earth in human form to repair the human relationship with him which was damaged when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. Jesus's crucifixion was the atonement (healing) for human sin. Through the death of Jesus Christians believe they can achieve eternal life in heaven with God
The Word
Jesus is referred to as “the Word”. This could mean that Jesus is part of the Trinity. It was the part of God (in human form) that was sent to earth. It could mean that just as words link humans together as tools of communication to increase understanding, Jesus is the LINK that connects God to humans.
Matthew account
Mary and Joseph were engaged to be married when Mary became pregnant. Joseph considered divorcing Mary but an angel appeared to him and not him not to this. Jesus was then born. Some mystics came from the east following a star - they believed this meant the birth of a new King. When King Herod heard about this, he felt threatened and asked the mystics to report back to him. The mystics found Jesus in a house in Bethlehem where they presented him with gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh - they were warned in a vision not to return to King Herod
Luke's Account
Mary and Joseph were not married when Mary became pregnant and they did not marry afterwards. The Romans were planning to conduct a census of the Jewish population - all Jews had to return to the place where they were born. Joseph was from Bethlehem (the hometown of King David) so he and Mary travelled there. When they arrived, there was no accommodation - Jesus was born and he was placed in a manger (animal’s feeding trough). Some shepherds were visited by an angel and told about the birth of Jesus - they followed the directions given and found Jesus in the manger.
Matthew's account meaning
Matthew is showing the Divine nature of Jesus as the Son of God. His birth is respectable - his parents are married, he is born in a house and visited by important people. The gifts represent Gold = royalty, frankincense = messiahship, and myrrh = holy priesthood.

Luke's account meaning
This account shows the humanity of Jesus - he is born in humble circumstances to unmarried people, he is visited by ordinary working people (shepherds) and not given gifts.
The Golden Rule
' treat others as you would like to be treated' The Golden rule appears in the Old Testament and in most religions in some form- Jesus was not the first person to share this teaching. It is the idea of treating all people the same and fairly, with respect and dignity.
The Kingdom of God
'“Those who do good will gain the reward of eternal life in God’s kingdom”. This is based on how Jesus judges people on their behaviour and actions. Punishment is the result of doing evil BUT also failing to do good. Motivation is also important - the promise of a reward should not be the motivation for doing good. Jesus also explains that the way to Heaven is not easy - the entrance to Heaven requires moral discipline which is hard to attain.
Agape Love
“A new command I give to you: love one another.” Agape is ‘unconditional’ love - putting the welfare of others before yourself. “Love your neighbour” - this teaches that everyone is your neighbour and you should always try to help. The teachings reflect that anyone who needs help deserves help from a Christian - it is a duty.
Forgiveness
Important when something wrong has been done, but does not mean a person 'gets away with it'. Christians recognise a person should receive punishment and consequences, but this should be given alongside forgiveness.
Jesus: '"Love your neighbour" - let go of hatred and replace it with love. "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" - even those you do not get on with deserve love.'
Jesus: '"Forgive us our trespasses" - we expect forgiveness from God so should also be willing to show it to others' trespasses.'
Jesus: '"Father forgive them for they know not what they do" - the words spoken by Jesus on the cross'
Treasures on Heaven and Earth
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth...but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” Jesus teaches that performing good deeds is similar to putting money in a bank or saving up treasures. Good deeds are seen to have a spiritual value that is revealed after death.
Blasphemy
Crime against God
Jesus claimed to be able to forgive sin
Jewish authorities viewed him with suspicion and accused him of blasphemy
Messiah
Jesus was believed to be the Messiah by his followers
