Cards (5)

  • Resting potential

Neuron is not transmitting action potential and is at rest.
The inside is more negative than the outside.
  • Depolarisation
A nerve impulse is received from another neuron, sodium goes in making the inside more positive.
  • Repolarisation
Sodium channels close and the potassium channels open and potassium diffuses out of the cell. Making the inside more negative.
  • Hyperpolarisation
Potassium ions channels close more slowly than the sodium channels. Excess potassium ions diffuse out of the neuron.
  • Resting potential (II)
Potassium ions diffuse back in through the leaky ion channels and restores resting potential.
