  Adv. - more water can be held in the channel, it can used to reduce flood risk in built-up areas

  Disadv. speeding up the river increases flood risk downstream
• Flood relief channels

  Adv. - removes excess water from flooding

  Disadv. - expensive to build, the relief channel may also flood
