  • The Catholic Church was alarmed about the spread of Protestantism. This is called the counter reformation.The Catholic Church needed to limit the damage so they took 3 approaches

  • The first approach was the courts of inquisition. The court of Inquisition was set to arrest,punish anyone, who they thought was a threat to the Catholic Church. They tried to get people to recant their views through imprisonment and torture people who were found guilty could be burned at the stake known as auto-da-fé.(public) they also find people confiscated property or make them wear a yellow clack called sanbenito
  • The second approach was new religious orders. The church had to reconnect so they found new religious orders; Ursuline nuns and capuchin monks. They work in communities helping people and preaching the gospel. The most important society was the society of Jesus(Jesuits). This was founded by ignatius loyola in 1534. They travelled around the world converting people in Asia and America to Christianity. They set up schools and hospitals around Europe to help the poor. The counter reformation was successful in preventing the spread of spread of protestantism but they were unable to reverse it from countries where it had been established
