Ch17 - Elements, Compounds, Mixtures

Cards (2)

  • Element - a substance that cannot be split by chemical means and only contain one type of atom
Compound - a substance made of two or more elements that have chemically bonded/contain two different types of atoms. Ex) water
Mixtures - consists of two or more substances that have mingled with each other but not chemically combined
  • Experiment - making a mixture of iron and sulfur
    1. Weigh out the iron and sulfur
    2. Use a mortar and pestle to grind the two
    3. The iron-sulfur mixture can be separated with a magnet
    4. Heating the mixture, a chemical reaction, forms a compound known as iron sulfide or FeS.
    5. The compound now cannot be separated with a magnet.
