Cards (3)

  • 'my thoughts do twine and bud about thee, as wild vines, about a tree' - nature imagery shows natures wild and unrestrained growth. her thoughts nearly consume the tree which represents her lover. the physical closeness between vine and tree portray the sensual relationship as well as describing how her thoughts have got out of control. a tree may symbolise stability and strength that she admires.
  • 'and breathe within thy shadow a new air' - she wants to see him due to sensory reasons. the only deep happiness will come from his presence, so much so it will feel like a new experience. a shadow links back to the tree and demonstrates how he provides protection for her.
  • ' i do not think of thee. i am too near thee' - ends poem with a clear solution to the problem. it also uses a cyclical structure which shows that her love for him is infinite. it shows how she breaks free of her obsessive thoughts and they are able to love eachother freely
