  • climbing my grandfather can be compared to follower as they both contain the theme of idolising a family member as well as containing extended metaphors of extreme sports. in follower, the child is doubtful of his idolisation as he doesnt feel he can live up to expectations but this is not the case in climbing my grandfather
  • eden rock can be compared to before you were mine as they both are semi-autobiographical poems which present ideas of fond memories of parents, as well as both containing connotations of the afterlife. They both miss a form of their parent that they no longer have. However in Eden Rock, the child feels his parents are longing for him to join them which shows he believes he makes their life better but the speaker in before you were mine sees herself as a hindrance to what her mother could have been.
  • letters from Yorkshire can be compared to mother, any distance as they both employ unconventional means to maintain a loving relationship. they also both explore the idea of growing up which creates distance within family relationships. however, in letters from Yorkshire, a gap that is metaphorically closing is presented but in mother, any distance it appears to be growing.
  • both sonnet 29 and love's philosophy use nature imagery as a metaphor for romantic love. Also both show longing as a result of denied physical love in relationships as well as commenting on it as unifying. sonnet 29 presents a hopeful and positive resolution whereas in love's philosophy the speaker is left without an answer.
  • when we two parted can be compared to neutral tones as they explore the themes of lost love and its aftermath and describe the sorrow it brings. they do this by using a bitter tone to convey their sorrow. neutral tones used nature imagery however when we two parted uses imagery of death and funerals
  • porphyrias lover and the farmers bride can be compared as they both convey how frustrated desire in imbalanced relationships can lead to violence. the speakers can be categorised as possessive objectifying males. the speaker in farmers bride is more aware of the suffering he is creating for his lover. porphyrias lover has a more intimate feel but the farmers bride depicts the physical distance due to fear.
  • singh song can be compared to sonnet 29 as they comment on the consuming nature of romantic love as well as both expressing a desire for physical love. singh song uses an immature tone for the poem but sonnet 29 has a more traditional structure.
  • winter swans can be compared to walking away as they highlight the challenging emotions of distance and separation in relationships. in walking away the process of separation is described as natural whereas in winter swans nature brings harmony and closeness to the once distant couple.
