  • Ion - positive OR negative atomic charge
    A metal is an element that usually forms positive ions / loses electrons
    A non-metal is an element that usually forms negative ions / gains electrons
  • Properties of metals:
    • Lustrous - its appearance is shiny. Ex) gold, silver
    • Ductile - can be stretched into wire. Ex) copper
    • Malleable - can be beat into many shapes.
    • Conducts heat - allows heat to pass through it. Ex) pots, pans
    • Conducts electricity - allows current to flow through it.
    • Strong - can support a heavy load.
