• Stratification is the division of social groups into layers, like those of a hierarchy. Open systems of stratification tend to be meritocratic and based on income, which allow for social mobility. There are also closed systems of stratification, like Apartheid, which divided people by ethnicity and was not based on equality of opportunity.
