anaerobic respiration

• glycolysis is the first phase in the breakdown of glucose and doesn't require oxygen (splitting glucose)
• anaerobic respiration is the production of lactic acid without oxygen

  glucose -> lactic acid (if O2 isn't available) + 2ATP
• if no oxygen is available, the pyruvate is converted to lactic acid by fermentation
• a glucose molecule is broken down, through a series of 10 steps in to 2 molecules of pyruvic acid (a more usable form for the body)
• fermentation stage of anaerobic respiration does not produce any additional ATP
• glycolysis of one molecule of glucose releases enough energy to convert 2 molecules of ADP to ATP
• anaerobic respiration allows cells to produce some energy in the absence of oxygen
