  • A: One study showing the impact of cultural dimensions on memory was done by Kulkofsky et al in their study of flashbulb memory. The researchers wanted to see if there was a difference in the rate of flashbulb memories in collectivistic and individualistic cultures.
  • P:To carry out the study, Kulkofsky gave a flashbulb memory questionnaire, to people from 5 different countries, from individualistic cultures like the US and collectivistic cultures like China. The participants were asked to recall public events that took place in their lifetime, both questions on how they learned about it (accuracy of recall) and how important it was (emotional).
  • R: . The researchers found that if the event was of national importance, there was no significant difference in the level of FBMs. However, it was found that there were more FBM on public events in individualistic cultures, and fewer examples of flashbulb memories in collectivistic cultures for such events.
  • C: It was concluded that in a collectivistic culture like China, personal importance and intensity of emotion plaved less of a role in predicting FBM, compared with more individualistic cultures that place greater emphasis on an individual's personal involvement and emotional experiences
