Momentum

    Cards (8)

    • Momentum
Momentum is only for a moving object. Positive momentum= to the right and negative momentum= to the left. The momentum of an object can change if the object decelarates/ accelerates, changes directio or if the mass changes
    • Examples of momentum
If object collide and move in opposite directions= elastic collision. This happens when objects have different velocities. If objects collide and move in the same direction = inelastic collision. This happens when objects have the same mass and velocity.
    • Law of conservation of momentum
In a closed system, momentum before and after the event is always the same. When 2 objects collide, both objects will react causing one object to speed ip and the other to slow down. Object of equal mass will have an equal acceleration
    • Forces and momentum
When a force acts on an object that is moving, the object will accelerate or decelerate causing a change in momentum. The force is the rate of change of momentum
    • Define inertia
Inertia is the tendency of an object to continue in its state of rest or in uniform motion uncless acted upon by an external force
    • Inertia and motion
If an object it at rest, it will tend to remain at rest and if an object is moving at constant velocity it will continue to do so.
    • Inertial mass
The property of an object which describes how difficult it is to change its velocity. It is the ratio between the force applied to it and the acceleration experienced. Inertial mass= force/acceleration
    • Describe the relationship between inertial mass and acceleration
Inertial mass is inversely proportional to acceleration. Larger inertil mass= small acceleration vice versa
