  • Structure of long bone
    • Consists of a long shaft
    • Yellow marrow contains fat cells and leukocytes.
    • Red marrow produces erythrocytes and leukocytes.
    • All bones in upper and lower limbs are long bones except patella, carpals and tarsals.

    • Living tissue
    • Compact bone consists of dense tissue and forms the surface of bones. They provide strength and support.
    • Spongey tissue consists of softer tissue and forms the heads of long bones and contain red marrow. They exert resistance against forces that act on the bone.
  • Cartilage
    • A tough, elastic connective tissue.
    • Protects joints and facilitates movement.
  • Tendons
    • Inelastic connective tissue
    • Attach muscles to bones.
    • Inelasticity allows for the contraction & relaxation of muscles, facilitating movement.
  • Ligaments
    • Consist of tough, elastic connective tissue.
    • Attach bone to bone.
    • Stretch enough to control movement in a joint.
    • Stabilise joints.
