5-Characteristics of polymer-based sheet and film

    Cards (9)

    • Performance characteristics of polymer-based sheet and film
      • Polymer film is usually very thin and flexible, such as cellulose acetate used for photographic film
      • Polymer sheet is thicker than polymer film and is available in stock sheets of varying thicknesses-for example, foam board sheet is available in 3 mm 5 mm 10 mm and 20 mm standard thickness
    • Foam board

Two outer layers of card with a foam middle core uses: mood board backing, presentation boards, modelling
    • Fluted PP sheet

Extruded sheet with integral 'flutes or corrugations. Lightweight and easily bent along the flutes; uses: signs(eg construction site signs), storage box construction, portfolio cases, small models
    • Translucent PP sheet
Tough polymer sheet. Can be folded millions of times. Virtually impossible to tear, water resistant uses: packaging products, folders and boxes
    • Styrofoam
Dense, closed-cell foam. Can be cut, shaped and sanded with standard workshop tools uses: product modelling, formers for moulding and laminating
    • Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sheet

Tough, available in thin sheet form, transparent, good chemical resistance, flexible uses: food wrapping, air pillow packaging, bubble wrap, carrier bags
    • Plastazote foam
Closed-cell polyethylene foam, tough, flexible, good impact resistance, impermeable to liquids uses: swimming floats, gym and exercise mats, sound and pipe insulation, stage props, protective packaging
    • Cellulose acetate
Transparent, tough, naturally biodegrades uses: packaging film, membranes, photographic film
    • Polylactide
Transparent, tough, naturally biodegrades, uses: biodegradable packaging film
