    Alcohol + Exercise + Smoking + Diet
  • Impact of poor lifestyle choices on the respiratory system (smoking)
Smoking affects oxygen transport because the carbon monoxide cigarettes contain combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells much more readily than oxygen. This reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, which causes breathlessness during exercise.
  • Effects of smoking
1 = irritation of trachea and bronchi
2 = reduced lung function and increased breathlessness caused by swelling and narrowing of lungs airways
3 = damage to the cells lining the airways from cigarette smoke, leading to a build-up of excess mucus in the lungs - leads to smokers cough in an attempt to get rid of mucus
4 = reduction in efficiency of gaseous exchange - increase risk of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
