Cards (12)

  • Stage 1(Day 1-5)-menstruation/uterus lining starts to break down and is lost.
Stage 2(5-14)-uterus lining thickens and builds up again
Stage 3(day 14)-ovulation where the egg is released
Stage 4(Day 14-28)-Uterus lining starts to build up again and is maintained
  • Hormones of the menstrual cycle
1)FSH->causes the egg to mature in the ovary
2)Oestrogen->causes the uterus lining to thicken
3)LH->cause the egg to be released(ovulation)
4)Progesterone->cause the uterus lining to maintain
  • Day 1-5-Menstruation, FSH is released ,Egg matures in the follicle, FSH stimulates oestrogen
Day 5-14-Oestrogen builds up the uterus lining, Oestrogen stimulate LH, Oestrogen inhibits FSH
Day 14-LH causes the egg to be released(ovulation),LH stimulates progesterone, LH inhibits oestrogen
  • If a woman is not pregnant
-Progesterone level rise after day 14(ovulation) then fall after day 21. Low progesterone level triggers menstruation around day 28.
    If a woman is pregnant
-Progesterone level increase after day 14 and remain high.
  • Before ovulation(Day 1-14)-The egg is described as a follice. It begins to mature in the ovary.
After ovulation(Day 14-28)-The follice is released from a structure called the Corpus Lutuem. The corpus luteum remains the ovary and releases progesterone.
  • 4) Corpus Luteum produces progesterone which maintain the lining if the uterus and stop menstruation , Progesterone inhibits FSH and LH so progesterone level stays high.
