  • School sport remains an extra-curricular activity for pupils. This has a number of advantages:
    1. Allows ethos of Pe to dominate and an educational focus is maintained within school sport provision
    2. Allows individual choice for both teachers and pupils who are under no pressure to involve themselves/participate if they don't want to
    3. Schools can cater for those who are interested in competitive sport via provision of a range of sporting opportunities to develop and improve talents
    4. School sport is relatively easy to access and cheaper than joining a sports club
  • School sport remains an extra-curricular activity for pupils. This has a number of disadvantages:
    1. If optional as an extra-curricular activity it doesn't necessarily reach the max number and some talented individuals might miss out
    2. It might be viewed as elitist if only a minority of pupils stay behind at school/compete for school at the weekends
    3. It relies heavily on teacher goodwill; teachers may sometimes opt out due to other pressures on their time (attendance at staff meetings)
    4. School sporting facilities may not be used to their full capcity
