• Horizon A is called the topsoil and consists of insects, worms and plant roots and is shallow in the tropical rainforest
• Horizon B is called the subsoil and in tropical rainforests this section is 'laterite', it has few nutrients, no humius and if they are exposed to the sun they are baked hard
• Horizon C is bedrock
