  • An international socialist organisation that promoted marxism and spreading ‘proletarian revolution’ from Russia to the world.
  • First congress was held in Moscow in March 1919
  • More than 50 delegates from Europe, USA, Australia and Japan
  • Chairman was Zinoviev, but Lenin was the dominant influence
    • By 1921 it was seen as a waste of time as they realised the world revolution wasn’t likely
    • Bolshevik Russia was left alone in a capitalist world
    • Was now a changed outlook from Bolsheviks that meant they felt as if they should focus more on Russias issues rather than international issues
    • Remained an important symbol and all Bolshevik leaders were at least outwardly committed to its aims.
