October revolution leads to the Bolsheviks seizing power
Consolidate power through:
Used the secretpolice force (CHEKA)
Issued several decrees between October and December 1917, including the decree on peace, land, nationalities and workers rights.
Shut down the constituent assembly in January 1918
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
Civil war (which the Bolsheviks won)
Censorship in 1921
Red terror (executing their opponents)
Decree on Land
Abolished private ownership, including land owned by the Tsar, the Church and private land owners. Given to peasants in the hope of extra support.
Decree on Peace
Called for peace to be negotiated between all countries at war. Means the Bolsheviks could concentrate on establishing a government and consolidating power.
Decree on workers rights
Focused on improvements to working conditions such as payment and unemployment benefits, and put factories under the control of the workers in hope for support
Decree on nationalities
Stated that the different nationalities could govern themselves. Issued in the hope they wouldn't use the collapse of the Tsarist government to gain independence.
