  • Bolshevik Russia was diplomatically isolated in 1921, as it was excluded from the League of Nations
    • Lenin had to come to terms with the fact that the world revolution would be post poned
    • The rest of the world had to come to terms with the fact that Bolshevism wouldn’t go away any time soon
    • People had acknowledged the isolation and that there had to be a way to co-exist
  • Britain had agreed to trade agreements in 1920, which effectively recognised Russia as a state and Lenin was particularly interested in trade agreements with Germany.
  • Chicherin, who was deputy commissar of foreign affairs, made a new approach and therefore led to the Treaty of Rapallo
  • Treaty Of Rapallo (1922)
    • Articles 1 & 2 agreed to waive claims of compensation from WW1
    • Article 3 concerned the reopening of formal diplomatic relations
    • Articles 4 & 5 dealt with ‘mutual goodwill’ in commercial and economic relations
