Aims of sentencing

• The aims of sentencing are contained in section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003, which defines the purpose of sentencing as:

  1. the punishment of offenders
  2. the reduction of crime (including deterrence)
  3. the reform and rehabilitation of offenders
  4. the protection of the public, and
  5. the making of reparations by the offenders to the persons affected by their offences
