Periodic table lists all of the elements known in order of increasing atomic number - into vertical columns called groups and horizontal rows called periods.
Arrangement of periodic table:
Elements with similar properties appear in the same group.
Metals found to left and centre.
Non-mental found to right.
Metalloids found in between.
Metals and non-metals
Metals
Properties:
Shiny
Good conductors
High melting / boiling points
Malleable (easy to shape)
High density
Strong / solid
Sonorous (ring like bell)
Ductile (can be drawn out in wire)
Non-metals
Properties:
Dull
Poor conductors
Low melting / boiling points
Low density
Brittle
Metalloids - border of metal and non-metals so can have properties of both.
E.G. Silicon - solid, conducts electricity, shiny, low density, brittle.
