Shylock was skilfully conveyed through his qualities.Shylock is
vengeful.Shylocks
vengefulness is cleverly conveyed through the
key
scene
act 1 scene 3.In this scene shylock is approached by
Antonio
to loan
him a
sum
of
3000
ducats.Shylock is hesitant to do so,as he recalls when
Antonio diminished
hil as a person and he behaved in an
unpleasant
manner.
This is evident in the play when shylock states "you call me
misbeliever cut throat dog
" and "you
spit upon my Jewish gaberdine
".
His
vengefulness
is illustrated as he has piled
up
everything that has
been
previously
said to him By
Antonio.
He also takes advantage of
Antonio's
desire to borrow from him. Giving that the
loan condition
was
brutal Antonio said "I shall seal unto this
bond.
" Shylock is
confident
that
Antonio would end up forfeiting a bound of
flesh
as his ventures are at
sea.
His
ventral
nature is powerfully depicted in Shakespeare's play in act
four
scene one of the
merchant
of
Venice.
After the three month period ended,
shylock brought
Antonio
to court since he was unable to prepare the
loan
because of this
financial
situation.
The duke urges him to soften his heart but he responded by saying "
Tis
mine and so I will have it
". From this quote it is evident that he feels that
he owns the pound of flesh because of
Antonio's failure to pay back
the
loan.
In Court a lawyer appears to defend Antonio however this lawyer
was Portia. He stated that
the
quality of
mercy
is not strained/ it's
enthroned in the
hearts
of
kings.
The speech urges shylock to be
merciful
but he
refused
, in the end his
vengeance
landed him in the
wrong
direction because his bond was
illegal because he intended to
murder
a citizen. He now has to
forfeit
his
wealth
to his daughter and her husband and become a
Christian
he has
no choice but to
obey.
In conclusion I think the quality of being
vengeful
for was
vividly
conveyed through the key scenes chosen and some of the quotes
portrayed an
aggravated tone
which matches his
vengeful personality.
