    Lost approximately 3/4 of its rainforest due to deforestation

    total cost of drought was approximately £4 billion
    food prices in kenya increased by over 130%
    food production fell by over 25%
    government paid farmers were paid £65 a week for weak, dead cattle but this isn’t enough buy new cows
  • environmental effects��

    rivers dried up completely (eg Njoro)
    farmers illegally took their cows into nature reserves to eat the grass there leading to overgrazing
    over 150,000 cattle died (was all nomadic farmers had - damages reputation)
    flamigos died due to lack of water (decreasing tourism)
    zebras, elephants, etc. were hunted for their meat illegally by poaching

    foof aid was given to 10 million people but many of them lived in rural area and were hard to reach
    the government paid farmers £65 a week for dying cows (this a wasn’t enough to buy new cattle -lost their livelihood)
    sand dams were built to trap water to prevent it evaporating
    the NGO Water Aid helped to drill bore holes into many villages to access safe clean water. they were solar powered and Kenya has a hot climate so didn’t need electricity or power cables that would damage local area
