  • -Introduction-

    • There are many different ways that Britain changed during the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution itself lasted from c.1759-1900. During this time period, a lot of things changed. There were a lot of differences in population, education and even a few changes in the vote. But which, out of the three, was the most important?
  • -Population (1)-
    • The most significant change in Great Britain during the Industrial Revolution period was population
    • For example in 1750, 11 million people lived in Great Britain. Infant mortality was high as many babies died before their first birthday. The annual death rate was 28 deaths per 1000 people.
    • As a result of this the population decreased as many children’s lives were lost. However, families started to enlarge as the larger the family, the more people would survive.
  • -Population (2)-

    • In addition, the population in 1900 was 42 million people. The population continued rising in the majority of the UK but fell in Ireland due to the Irish Famine of 1845-52. The annual death rate had decreased to 18 deaths per 1000 people.
    • This led to the population rising as the birth rate remained the same but the death rate decreased. The Great Famine resulted in many more Irish people moving to Britain. This resulted in the population almost doubling.
  • -Population(3)-

    • Overall, the population could be viewed as the most significant change because the birth rate increased drastically over the years and the death rate gradually decreased. This resulted in a rise in population in the UK. This both positively and negatively impacted Great Britain.
