  • 6000 Protestant pastors joined Martin Niemoller’s Confessional Church as a protest against Nazi policy. Only 2000
    remained in the German Christian Church.
  • Few church leaders openly spoke out against the Nazis, but many people attended the Confessional churches.
  • About 800 pastors were arrested and sent to concentration camps.
  • Niemoller had originally supported the Nazi Party, but later on he was arrested a number of times for speaking out
    against the Nazis. He was sent to a concentration camp in 1938, where he stayed until 1945.
