Types of Conformity

Cards (4)

  • Kelman suggested that there are three types of conformity:
    • Compliance
    • Identification
    • Internalisation
  • Compliance is the shallowest end of conformity. The individual's public behaviours change publicly, but not privately. This is due to the want to be liked by the majority.
  • Identification is the 'mid-point' between Internalisation & compliance n the scale of conformity. This is when an individual conforms because they admire or respect someone else/ value their group or majority. This is temporary, as private attitudes do not change, and going with the majority/ group helps the individual feel better about themselves.
  • Internalisation is the deepest end of conformity. This is when the individual internalises a group's values & beliefs both privately and publicly & the views are genuinely accepted. This is reflected in their behaviour and change of mindset. E.G: Becoming a Vegan.
