Intentional communication that happens within the bounds of specific contexts
Purposive Communication
Challenges the communicator to strategically use a language that is understood, familiar, and accepted in a context, in order to communicate his/her specific intentions
When the communicator fails to consider context, there is a possibility of a communication breakdown
Purpose and Context
Two important factors why language varies
Linguistic variation occurs in different levels: sounds, word-structure, or grammar (syntax)
Elements of Communication
1. Source/Sender encodes message
2. Receiver decodes message and transmits feedback
3. Role reversal happens: sender becomes receiver
Barriers or interferences affect the receiver's reception and understanding of the message
These are referred to as noise
Types of noise
Physical/external
Internal
Mechanic
Semantic
External/physical noise
Any unwanted or unpleasant sound in the environment that causes disturbance
Internal noise
Any of the communicator's state or feelings that interfere with his/her interpretation of the speaker's message
Language barrier
When participants come from different linguistic backgrounds and do not have a common language code to convey their thoughts
Jargon
Terms specific to a field that confuse most laymen
Other potential barriers to effective communication
Psychological and emotional issues
Gender and culture
Organizational structure
Technology
Communicator's culture, education, experiences, moods, and emotions could either facilitate or interfere with the communication process
The various channels that can be used by an individual in communicating his/her intended meanings are speech, actions, and written texts
The communicator's appearance, age, culture, gender, education, religion, mood, memory, attitude, and the presence of technology could affect the flow of communication
Context, i.e. circumstances or events that encompass the entire communicative event, significantly affect the communicator's choice of language, mode, and channel in order to successfully carry out the communication process
