Classification of Matter

Cards (17)

    • Substance
    • A form of matter that has definite composition and distinct properties.

    • This means that their composition will be the same no matter where you find them.
    • MIXTURE
    • A combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct identities.
  • Mixtures are Either Homogenous and Heterogenous.
  • HOMOGENEOUS

    • Homo is a prefix meaning one or uniform.
    • Geneousis a suffix meaning throughout.
  • "Homogeneous" means uniform throughout or one throughout.
    • Homogeneous mixture it refers to a mixture whose composition is uniform all throughout.
    • There is an even or equal distribution of a substances that are combined together.
    • The term "phase of matter" refers to a physically distinct and mechanically separable part of a system.

  • Solutions

    • are Homogeneous mixtures of two or more substances whose particles are of atomic or molecular size
  • A solution consist of two parts: Solute and Solvent
  • SOLUTE - the substance being dissolved, which may be solid, liquid, or gas.
  • SOLVENT - the substance doing the dissolving, which is usually a liquid.
  • HETEROGENEOUS

    • Hetero is a prefix of two or more phases or unequal
    • Geneouses a suffix meaning throughout.
    • A heterogeneous mixture is one in which the different components are easily recognized
    • Two or more phases of matter can be seen.
  • SUSPENSIONS

    • Are heterogeneous mixtures which contain large particles that tend to settle on standing.
  • COLLOIDS

    • Are mixtures whose particles are larger than the ions or molecules in solutions.
    • A colloid has two parts,
    • The dispersing medium (Solvent) and;
    • The dispersed matter (solute)
  • Colloids have very small particles compared with suspensions but they are too big to pass through a filter paper.
