  • What was the western front?
    Area of France covering 400 miles from the English chanel to the Alps.
  • Types of trench
    Firing trench - also known as the front line trench, where attacks were mounted from.
    Communication trench - connected the other trench lines together.
    Reserve trench - behind the support trench, reserved troops would be based here in case of attack.
  • What is a dug-out?
    A protected bunker from the trench where officers would plan and communicate
  • What is no-mans-land?
    The area between the two enemy trenches.

    Britain stopped Germany capturing ports such as calais.
    Trenches were built stretching to Switzerland.
