Home Education

Cards (4)

  • Home education is where parents teach their children the academic curriculum at home instead of sending them to a private or public school.
  • Why do people choose to home educate?
There are personal reasons, such as they don't believe mainstream schools are good enough. There are religious reasons, such as they might not be able to get a place in a religious school that they want. There are also disabilities, such as the child may have special educational needs which parents may feel cannot be accommodated in a school environment.
  • Advantages - able to design a personal curriculum, having freedom of timetables, having an education that works best for your child, no peer pressure, there is a lower chance of bullying, children can be more comfortable, no school run, cheaper than schools especially private schools and there is more flexibility.
  • Disadvantages - there are financial requirements, it doesn't help your child to socialise, might not have the same level of diploma/authorization which can affect future employments, a lot of time and energy is needed from the adult, the children will have less extracurricular opportunities, parents might not have all the knowledge or resources needed, makes it harder for the parents to achieve a work-life balance, can strain the relationship between parent and child, and the parent can get burnt out from having to plan lessons, provide instructions and monitor progress.
