Is education fit for purpose

Cards (3)

  • Reasons as to why education is fit for purpose:
    • Socialises students ready to be functioning members of society
    • Can be changed to work better for individuals such as home education
    • The education system works for some people
    • Tries to get people the qualifications that they need for future life
    • Opportunities to socialise
    • Teaches norms and values
    • Some countries models are fit for purpose
  • Reasons why education isn't fit for purpose:
    • Doesn't work for everyone
    • Everything is generalised and not done for individuals - not tailored to individuals
    • Exam testing isn't the best way to test everyone as exams don't work for some people - teaching to the test
    • Everyone learns things in a different way and at a different speed
    • Restricts creativity and innovation
    • Systems have hardly changed over 150 years
    • Doesn't teach life skills
    • Home education doesn't socialise
    • Deschooling
    • Not all people achieve
    • More work based skills
  • To make education fit for purpose schools can change how they structure the days and how they teach the students. Teachers can change how they teach to allow more creativity and innovation but also to allow the students to work at the pace that works best for them. Students can get references instead of qualifications as tests are not the best way to test everyone.
