Internal Factors

Cards (6)

  • Internal factors: school ethos, hidden curriculum, streaming and setting, subcultures, labelling/self-fulfilling prophecy/teacher and pupil interactions
  • School ethos - the culture of the school, their beliefs and views on values, support and achievement
  • Hidden curriculum - secondary socialisation, what the school teaches you that isn't on the national curriculum
  • Streaming and setting - how pupils are grouped (what sets they are in), streaming (same set for every lesson), setting (in sets based on ability in each different lesson), mixed ability (where classes have students with different abilities)
  • Subcultures - anti school (against school; late, doesn't do homework, messes around in lessons), pro school (for school; on time, does homework, works and concentrates in lessons)
  • Labelling/self-fulfilling prophecy/teacher and pupil interactions - if labelled something good the student will try hard at school. If labelled something negative a student may not try as hard. If labelled a bad student they might accept it and not try to change. If a student is labelled something good, teachers might treat them better than if they were labelled something bad.
