  • Mental health and mental disorders
    Mental health:
    a state of wellbeing in which an individual realises his or her own abilities,
    can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is
    able to make a contribution to his or her community (WHO, 2017)
  • Mental health problem
    Occurs as a result of a life stressor
    Usually less severe and of a shorter duration than a mental
    disorder
    Resolves with time or when the stressor changes or passes
  • Mental disorder
    Also called psychological disorder or mental illness
    Involves a combination of thoughts, feelings and/or behaviours
    which impair the ability to function effectively in everyday life
    Examples include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia

    MODEL include

    Factors which arise from
    within the individual and

  • EXTERNAL FACTORS
    Factors which arise from the
    environment of an individual
    and contribute to their mental
    health
  • 4p model includes
    protective factors- prevents the occurrence or re occurrence
    predisposing risk factors- increased susceptibility through the possession or experience of a risk factor
    precipitating risk factor- increased susceptibility and contributes of occurrence
    perpetuating risk factor- maintains occurrence and inhibit recovery
