Cognitive Neuroscience

Cards (6)

  • Due to modern brain imaging techniques and procedures, cognitive neuroscience emerged.
  • The cognitive approach is an approach that maps human behaviour and brain function. Brain imaging techniques allow psychologists to discover when and where things happen in the brain in relation to people's behaviour at the time.
  • Give three methods used in cognitive neuroscience:
    1. Lesion studies.
    2. Electrophysiology.
    3. Neuroimaging.
  • What are lesion studies in cognitive neuroscience?
Looking into people with brain damage to see how behaviour is effected.
  • What is electrophysiology in cognitive neuroscience?
Using electricity and magnetic fields to measure brain activity and brain waves.
  • What is neuroimaging in cognitive neuroscience?
Pinpointing areas of the brain which are active when a task is being performed. E.g. PET scans have been used to show the areas of the brain that are most active during memory tasks.
