The heart

• The position of the heart is:

  • inbetween the lungs
  • in the thoracic cavity
  • centre of chest cavity
  • apex points to the left
  • cardiac notch in left lung, for the heart to fit there
• The coronary veins and arteries provide heart muscle with oxygen, nutrients and removes wastes & carbon dioxide
• The heart muscle contracts and relaxes
• When arteries are narrowed, a heart attack occurs.
• The fat tissue protects the heart against shock & injury
• The apex is the tip of the heart, directed to the left, sitting by the left lung
• The sound of the heart is lub (closing atriventricular valves) dub (closing semilunar valves)
