Ethnicity and Achievement

Cards (4)

  • Highest achieving groups include Chinese and Indian. They are more likely to get higher GCSE and A Level grades than any other ethnic group.
  • Lowest achieving groups include Gypsy/Roma, Black Caribbean and Pakistani students who have lower levels of achievement than all other ethnic groups. The exception to this is the poorest White British boys and girls.
  • Statistics:
    • 13% of all pupils in KS4 were eligible for free school meals (FSM) in 2015/16
    • 25% of pupils from any other ethnic background were eligible for FSM, 23% of black people, 19% of pupils from a mixed race background, 18% of asian pupils, 12% of white pupils, 6% of chinese pupils.
  • Chinese pupils are less eligible for free school meals but they are also in the highest achieving groups. The higher the achievement the less eligible that ethnic group tend to be for free school meals. This could be because ethnic groups who are eligible may have more material deprivation.
