Achievements

• Nelson Mandela was able to turn the springbok symbol from one of white superiority to one of national unity
• World cup marked new era of sport in South Africa - demonstrated a united nation
• Began requiring two black people in every sports team
• To increase participation, adopted a programme similar to the pyramid structure of sport implemented by Cuba (centres of excellence were also established)
• Readdress inequalities created in the apartheid-era by developing “sport for all” schemes, with criteria to ensure financial assistance to who require it the most
• DSR has worked in conjunction with the Education Departments to ensure that more school children are active in sport or recreational activities
