  • Strickland was a gentleman MP from Yorkshire, in April 1571 he sent out a bill to reform the Book of Common Prayer by abolishing surplices, marriage rings, communion kneeling and other ‘superstitious’ practices
  • There was some support for the bill in the house, but not from higher authority; he was summoned by the Privy Council to answer accusations that he had infringed on the Queens prerogative as Supreme Governor
  • He was barred from the House, but allowed to return after an outcry from MPs, but his bill was not heard of again
