  • Criticism in academic circles: Thomas Cartwright (a cambridge professor) introduced presbyterian teaching into England in 1570, through a series of speeches; contrasted Elizabethan Church against early Church, arguing it didn't reflect biblica, he concluded bishops' role in Elizabeth's Church didn't reflect biblical practice; increased resentment against bishops due to clampdown on dissenting ministers and failure to lead 'true' reformation - so his freedom of speech was quickly removed along with his professorship
  • Criticism in academic circles: John Whitgift (vice-chancellor of the university) was determined it should be a model of orthodoxy
  • Appeal to public opinion: June 1572 a document called ‘The Admonition to the Parliament’ was published by two ministers (John Field and Thomas Wilcox); though addressed to MPs, it was to appeal generally to the public, it argued for the typical puritan demands (eradication of superstitious practices) and to replace the Church’s current hierarchy; proposal horrified all in established authority, even those who had a puritan outlook
  • Appeal to public opinion: Queen immediately had the two arrested and they spent a year in in Newgate Prison, yet the document still had a wide readership and initiated a pamphlet war between its supporters and detractors; it was a success in bringing Puritan ideas to the forefront of debate
