Heavenly Bites was designed to sell their product, brownies with strawberries and melted chocolate, to their target market of young teenage girls and several school teachers on Market Day. Its legal structure is a partnership where the profits and losses are shared between partners along with sharing unlimited liability, where each partner is responsible for the result for the business. Overall, the business was a success as Heavenly Bites was able to achieve its prime function of selling its product along with producing a profit of $178.10 having being able to sell out.
Federal
Not engaging in misleading or deceptive advertising
Protecting consumers from undesirable or competitive practices
This meant that the posters advertised to the target market were clear as to what the product was and the price it cost. This also meant that they were to participate in business practices that were desirable with logic and reason.
State
Work, Health & Safety Laws
Adquate and non-deceptive labelling of foods
This meant that Heavenly Bites had to clearly label what was in their product, which was done by adding notes to the poster that there was a presence of milk, nuts, gluten and eggs. This also included maintaining the hygiene of the business by using gloves, tongs and cleaning equipment before the start of lunch.
Local
Approval for use of land (which was managed by Commerce teachers)
Business signs (not too many posters)
For Heavenly Bites, this meant only putting up a limit of 3 posters around the school to maintain fair competition against other businesses.
The source of finance for our business was equity, where each partner of the business contributed $25 to use for our float and towards our budget. In total, the amount of money spent was $102.98 with $15 allocated towards float for Market Day. This totals to $125, which is the total of all the money put together by the partners. On Market Day, Heaven Bites produced a total of $303.10 with a profit of $178.10.
Price
In order to determine the price of the base, Market research was conducted through a google form shared to friends and other students in the school. 36 people out of 43 responses (92.3%) chose for a price of $3.50 and 50 cents for toppings. The price then decided was:
$3.50 for the base (strawberries, melted chocolate and brownie)
$0.50 for toppings (oreos, m&m’s or marshmallows)
This price is reasonably low for students to purchase the base and would also allow for extra profit if students choose the addition of toppings, increasing the total price of their purchase.
To determine their product, Heavenly Bites completed market research beforehand through a google form. 25 people out of 66 responses chose brownies with strawberries and melted chocolate (37.9%), which was the highest chosen option (out of 4 other choices). Another question also asked “Would you prefer to purchase something sweet or savoury on Market Day?” where 22 people chose sweet (51.2%). Ultimately, Heavenly Bites settled on their product of brownies with strawberries and melted chocolate.
Product Pt. 2:
On Market Day, members of the business also wore stickers that displayed the business logo (brownies with strawberries and melted chocolate) along with the business slogan (“one bite and you’ll be in heaven), linking to the business name. This enticed the target market to purchase the product through its connection to the posters, where both the logo and slogan were also shown.
Promotion:
Heavenly Bites’ marketing manager decided on placing advertisements posters through the school in areas such as:
BM stairs
EA building stairs
BM main doors
This is as many students travel past these areas so it would be most likely that they have viewed the posters. Posters were also put onto Compass, which is also used by both students and teachers, allowing for the business’ target market to view their business and purchase from it on Market Day. The posters were aesthetically pleasing along with being simple to view the prices and information displayed.
Place Strategies:
Heavenly Bites sold their product in Mercy Square near the EA kitchens. This would allow for sufficient space to support large lines and a distribution of students to visit the store in hopes to purchase something. The location of the business specifically also allowed for the use of the chocolate fountain (connection to electricity).
Operations - Inputs:
Heavenly Bites sourced their equipment and goods from suppliers such as Woolworths, Kmart and a local fruit shop (in Merrylands).
Before Market Day, roles for the day were divided as to who would be doing what (e.g cashier, distribution of product) along with where along our table.
Operations - Processes
Prep = Cut up the strawberries into halves (for normal strawberries) or quarters for bigger strawberries)
Make a total of 15 pre-made “bases” (brownies and strawberries + melted chocolate)
Place 3-4 cubes of brownies into a cup along with 2-3 halves of strawberry (depending on how much can fit into the cup)
Pour a decent amount of chocolate ontop
If required, add customer’s chosen toppings
Serve!
Operations - Outputs:
One member will be collecting orders with another handling money for the ordering line
The other three members will be completing orders along with handing them to customers when completed.
Strengths
Choice and variety of toppings
Unique product (with display of chocolate fountain)
Hardworking members
Weaknesses
Quick decrease in brownie supply
Need for additional help (for cashier, etc)
Opportunities
No other businesses doing the same product (brownies)
Location = In Mercy Square as decided by teachers
Threats
Other businesses selling desserts
Lack of Yr 10 students
Cash only (no eftpos available)
Duke of Ed (affected team communication)
Overall, the process of planning and preparing for Market Day along with selling on the day was a stressful and tense experience for the Heavenly Bites business. Yet, it was an enjoyable and collaborative time where team members were able to successfully contribute their ideas and thoughts in order to achieve the business’ goal.
Improvements:
Purchase more brownies mix and less toppings
Have two people working as cashier on the front table (managing flow of lines)
