1.4 SPLICES AND JOINTS

Cards (37)

  • Splices and Joints - are methods of connecting two pieces of wire so as to carry either a signal or an electrical current.
  • Rat Tail or Pig Tail Joint - A splice that is used in a junction box and for connecting branch circuits.
  • Western Union Splice - is the most common type of wire splice used extensively in inside and outside wiring.
  • Western Union Splice - This type of connection is used to splice small, solid conductors together.
  • Two types of western union splices:
    • Western Union short tie splice
    • Western Union Long Tie splice
  • Western Union Short Tie Splice - This is the most widely used splice or joint in interior wiring installation to extend the length of wire from one point to another.
  • Western Union Long Tie splice - This is used extensively for outside wiring to extend the length of wire from one end to another.
  • Fixture Joint - This is a type of branch joint connecting a small- diameter wire to the large diameter conductor, such as those used in lighting fixtures.
  • Plain Tap or Tee Joint - is used to a great extent joining Tap or other conductor to a through conductor as a branch or main circuit.
  • Plain Tap or Tee Joint - This is used where the tap wire is under considerable tensile stress circuit.
  • Knotted tap joint - is used to for branch joints to connect a branch wire to a continuous wire.
  • Knotted Tap Joint - This is used where the tap wire is under heavy tensile stress.
  • Aerial Tap - This is used as a temporary tap usually done in constructions sites.
  • Aerial Tap - The easy twist will facilitate tap wire movement
  • Through Fixture Joint - Also known as Back Turn Splice
  • Through Fixture Joint or Back Turn Splice - is used when fixture leads are connected to branch wires at an intermediate point.
  • Through Fixture Joint or Back Turn Splice - This joint will withstand considerable longitudinal strain.
  • Ordinary cable tap or tee joint - is used where large stranded wire or cables are tap to a through conductor.
  • Ordinary Cable Tap or Tee Joint - This is used on large solid conductors where it is difficult to wrap the heavy tap wire around the main wire.
  • Split cable Tap or tee Joint -is used where stranded cables are tapped to a through conductor.
  • Split Cable Tap or Tee Joint - This tapped is stronger than ordinary cable tap.
  • Multiple cable wrapped splice - is used more extensively on small strands wire and cables because the strands are more pliable and maybe wound together without much difficulty .
  • Single cable wrapped splice - Same as the multiple cable wrapped splice but wrapped individually.

  • Rat Tail or Pig Tail Joint - This kind of joint is commonly used to join two or more conductors inside the junction box.
  • Rat Tail or Pig Tail Joint- It is suitable for service where there is no mechanical stress when wires are to be connected in an outlet box, switch, or conduit fitting
