• In Act 2 Scene 5 , Shylock is leaving his home with Lancelot and Jessica inside to go to dinner at Bassanio's since he was invited. 1)' Do as I bid you ; Shut the doors after you ! '

  • He has power over her and she has to be an obedient daughter
  • Verb ' bid ' - had to follow his orders , she has no freedom of choice .
• Later on , Jessica runs away with Lorenzo and steals a lot of Shylock's money . 2)' Thou torturest me ... I would not have traded it for a wilderness of monkeys '


  It was important + sentimental to him = he does care for his family deep down but sometimes it isn't shown due to the importance of money in a world of antisemitism .
